Pressure Relief & Control
Advanced Overpressure Protection for Critical Transformer Assets
Rapid pressure rise and over‑pressure events inside oil‑filled electrical equipment can lead to tank rupture, oil discharge, fire risk, and environmental damage.
Insulect supplies a comprehensive range of Pressure Relief & Control Devices from COMEM and Qualitrol, ensuring effective pressure management and controlled discharge across all transformer sizes and applications.
These devices provide passive mechanical protection that operates independently of power supply, forming a critical last line of defence during internal fault events.

What Are Pressure Relief & Control Devices?
Pressure Relief Devices (PRDs) are mechanical safety components fitted to oil‑filled equipment to:
- Relieve excessive internal pressure during fault conditions
- Prevent tank deformation, rupture, or explosion
- Direct hot oil and gases away from personnel and critical equipment
- Automatically reseal after pressure returns to safe limits
Modern PRDs can also include alarm contacts, operation indicators, and controlled discharge ducts, supporting safer operation and condition monitoring.
Application Overview
Pressure Relief & Control Devices supplied by Insulect are commonly used on:
- Power and distribution transformers
- Generator step‑up transformers
- Load tap changers
- Reactors and oil‑filled auxiliary equipment
- Mobile and containerised transformer systems
They are suitable for small distribution units through to large power transformers, including offshore, coastal, high‑corrosion, and environmentally sensitive installations.
