Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) Monitoring

Real-Time Monitoring for Faster Response
Early Detection of Incipient Faults

A Clear View Into Transformer Health

Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) monitoring helps identify early signs of internal electrical or thermal issues inside transformers by measuring the gases that dissolve into the insulating oil. These gases are produced when components begin to heat, deteriorate, or experience electrical stress. By observing both gas levels and how quickly they change, DGA provides practical insight into developing problems so that action can be taken before a fault becomes serious.

Serveron TM3 Online Gas DGA Monitor-1

Application Overview

DGA monitoring is used across transmission, distribution and generation networks where transformer uptime is critical. Online systems monitor gas levels continuously—unlike periodic lab sampling—making them especially effective for identifying both rapid and slow‑developing electrical or thermal faults. Depending on the need, utilities deploy:

  • Hydrogen‑only monitors for healthy or lower‑criticality transformers.

  • Multi‑gas monitors for critical assets or transformers already showing gassing activity.

Both approaches support early detection, condition trending and better planning of maintenance or replacement.

TM1 Dissolved Gas Analyzers

Qualitrol Serveron TM1 DGA

The Serveron® Model TM1 offers a breakthrough price/performance point in online DGA. For the first time, the benefits of online condition monitoring can be realized across the distribution transformer fleet. The Serveron® TM1 continuously monitors and reports hydrogen PPM Levels and can be programmed to alarm based on PPM Levels and/or Rate of Change (ROC), warning operators of potentially disruptive transformer faults and pending failures.

  • Measures hydrogen only, no cross-interference
  • Direct oil immersion sensor (no membrane)
  • No consumables or sensor replacement required
  • Alarms on ppm and rate of change
  • 5-year data storage in onboard memory
  • Moisture-in-oil and oil temperature measurement.
  • Qualitrol provides utilities with the following services for our on-line DGA monitors.
  • Turnkey Installation Services including Serveron® TM1 deployment and TM View software user training
  • Serveron® Monitoring Service (SMS) offers the convenience of secure 24×7 access to all of your Serveron® DGA transformer monitor data from any Internet-connected Windows PC running our SMS software.
  • A variety of service plans to guarantee monitor operation over the long term

TM8 Dissolved Gas Analyzers

Serveron TM8 Online Gas DGA Monitor-2

The TM8 is the industry’s leading 8 gas online dissolved gas analysis monitor. Based on an analytical platform built around Gas Chromatogram (GC), the Serveron® TM8 takes the recognized laboratory technology onto your transformer. Unprecedented accuracy and repeatability make the TM8 the perfect solution for monitoring mission-critical applications where compromise is not allowed. The TM8 will provide a laboratory quality set of DGA results every 4 hours and up to once per hour under active fault conditions. With TM8 you can simultaneously track DGA, moisture, temperature and load on your transformer. IEEE and IEC diagnostic tools such as Rogers Ratios, and the Duvals Triangles 1, 4 & 5 and Duvals Pentagon for advanced diagnostics

  • Large transmission transformers (345 kV and above)
  • Generator step-up units (GSUs)
  • Industrial and substation transformers
  • Condition-based maintenance programs
  • Moisture-in-oil and oil temperature measurement
  • Integrated display
  • Interfaces: Cellular modem, Ethernet, Wireless Radio
  • TM View software and SmartSUB integration

What We Solve For

Transformers can develop internal issues long before they show external symptoms. Faults such as overheating, insulation breakdown, arcing, partial discharge and mechanical stress each produce specific gases. DGA monitoring identifies these changes early, helping avoid unplanned outages, extending transformer life and reducing the financial impact of emergency replacements. Continuous DGA also supports the shift from scheduled maintenance to condition‑based strategies by providing meaningful, real‑time data on asset health.
