Digital Fault Recording (DFR)
Accurate, High-Speed Monitoring of Power System Disturbances
Digital Fault Recording (DFR) is critical to understanding and responding to power system faults. By capturing high-speed, high-resolution snapshots of disturbances and transient events, modern DFR systems empower network operators with the insights they need for rapid diagnostics, event reconstruction and informed asset management decisions.

Application Overview
DFR is engineered for use in high‑voltage substations, transmission systems, and generating stations, enabling operators to monitor system behaviour during faults and disturbances. It supports variable sampling rates, extensive trigger options, synchronized data capture across multiple devices, and seamless integration into wide‑area monitoring systems. Whether used as a standalone recorder or as part of a multi‑device architecture, the DFR provides precise and time‑aligned fault records that support fast and accurate post‑event analysis.
Fault Investigation and Event Reconstruction
Capture and analyse high-speed fault records to determine the root cause of network disturbances. With flexible sampling rates and variable record lengths, the IDM+ ensures detailed insight into transient system behaviour.
Power System Transient Monitoring
Monitor high-frequency transients such as those from capacitor switching, FACTS devices or lightning-induced faults. 512 samples per cycle (25.6kHz) allows accurate reproduction of short-duration, high-impact events.
Storm Event and Grid Resilience Monitoring
Deploy DFRs across critical nodes to monitor system performance during storms and severe weather events. Automated analysis tools can rapidly assess network response and identify weaknesses for proactive maintenance.
Features & Functionality

With 20‑bit resolution on current channels and ±0.1% accuracy, the system provides clear and reliable data across all load conditions. This makes it easier to understand what caused a fault and verify how equipment performed.

The IDM+ records fault waveforms at very high speeds — up to 512 samples per cycle — so it can pick up fast‑moving changes in the power system. This helps operators clearly see what happened during a fault or disturbance.

The recorder can be set to trigger from many different conditions, such as limits being exceeded, fast changes, digital inputs, or power swings. It can also save up to 30 seconds of data before and after an event, so operators get the full picture.

Multiple IDM+ units can work together by sharing triggers over the network. With GPS or IRIG‑B time sync providing accuracy down to 100 nanoseconds, all captured records line up perfectly, making it easier to analyze system‑wide events.
