Overview
The Columboola Solar Farm is a 202.5 MWdc project in Queensland generating approximately 440 GWh of renewable energy annually, enough to power 75,000 homes. To support transformer health and grid reliability, Insulect supplied and commissioned a Serveron TM8 Multi-gas DGA Monitor, providing real-time dissolved gas analysis for proactive asset monitoring.
Challenge
Operating in a remote regional location, Columboola Solar Farm required a reliable way to monitor transformer health without relying on frequent site visits or reactive maintenance. Any unplanned transformer failure could result in extended downtime, lost generation, and costly repairs.
The challenge was to gain early visibility of transformer condition issues, before they could escalate, while supporting long‑term reliability and grid compliance for a high‑value renewable asset.
Solution
Insulect supplied and commissioned a Serveron TM8 Multi‑gas Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) Monitor on site. The TM8 provides continuous, real‑time monitoring of key fault gases within transformer oil, delivering early warning of developing electrical or thermal issues.
Insulect’s team managed the full commissioning process, ensuring the system was correctly configured, integrated, and operating to specification from day one. This allowed Luminous Energy to immediately access meaningful, actionable data on transformer condition.
Benefits
With continuous DGA monitoring in place, the Columboola Solar Farm now benefits from:
- Early fault detection, enabling proactive maintenance planning
- Reduced risk of unplanned outages, protecting generation revenue
- Improved asset visibility, particularly valuable in a remote location
- Greater operational confidence in transformer performance over time
The TM8 system allows site operators to move away from time‑based maintenance toward a condition‑based strategy, improving both reliability and efficiency.
Results
By implementing the Serveron TM8 Multi‑gas DGA Monitor, Luminous Energy strengthened transformer reliability at one of Queensland’s flagship renewable energy sites. Continuous monitoring now supports informed decision‑making, reduces operational risk, and helps safeguard long‑term asset performance.
For Columboola Solar Farm, this means greater confidence in protecting critical infrastructure, ensuring clean energy continues to flow reliably to the grid and the communities it serves.
