Overview

The New England Solar project is a 720 MW large-scale solar and battery development in New South Wales, powering around 300,000 homes annually and supporting community, environmental, and Indigenous initiatives. As part of its high-voltage infrastructure, Insulect supplied 33kV Disconnectors, ensuring safe and reliable grid integration.

Challenge

A project of this size comes with a key challenge, which is ensuring large amounts of solar energy can be safely and reliably delivered into the electricity grid.

Solar power changes throughout the day, depending on weather and sunlight. The electrical system needs to handle these changes while still operating safely and smoothly.

There is also a need for safe isolation points, so sections of the network can be worked on or maintained without affecting the rest of the system.

Solution

Insulect supplied 33kV disconnectors designed to support safe and reliable grid connection.

These disconnectors allow parts of the electrical system to be safely switched off when needed. This makes maintenance safer and helps operators manage the flow of electricity through the site.

The equipment was integrated into the project’s high-voltage infrastructure to support stable and controlled connection between the solar farm and the grid.

Benefits

With Insulect’s disconnectors in place, the New England Solar project has a safer and more reliable electrical system.

Operators can isolate parts of the network when needed, reducing risk during maintenance and improving overall safety. The system is able to handle changes in solar generation throughout the day.

This helps ensure that clean energy can be delivered to the grid consistently and efficiently.

Results

Today, the New England Solar project is supplying clean electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes across New South Wales, while supporting broader social and environmental goals.

Behind the scenes, its high-voltage system operates safely and reliably, allowing energy to flow from generation to the grid without interruption.
