Overview

The Wandoan South Project in Queensland is a large-scale renewable energy development combining up to 650 MW of solar and 450 MW of battery storage, designed to enhance grid reliability and support the region’s energy needs. To support safe and efficient high-voltage operations, Insulect supplied 36kV Disconnectors, 33kV Station Post Insulators, 275kV Capacitive Voltage Transformers, Power Quality Sensors to suit CVTs, and a 275kV Disconnector.

Challenge

Projects that combine solar and battery storage are more complex than standard generation sites. Power needs to be generated, stored, and then released into the grid at the right time, all while maintaining stable voltage and power quality.

The electrical system must handle changing energy flows throughout the day and respond quickly to demand. It also needs to provide safe isolation for maintenance and operate reliably in a tough outdoor environment.

Getting all of these elements to work together smoothly is critical to the success of the project.

Solution

Insulect supplied a range of high-voltage components to support the project’s electrical infrastructure.

This included 36kV and 275kV disconnectors for safe switching and isolation, allowing operators to manage different parts of the network safely. Capacitive voltage transformers (CVTs) and power quality sensors were provided to help monitor voltage levels and ensure stable performance.

In addition, station post insulators were supplied to support and protect the system, helping maintain safe operation under high-voltage conditions.

Together, these components were integrated into the project to support both energy generation and storage.

Benefits

With Insulect’s equipment in place, the Wandoan South Project benefits from a more controlled and reliable electrical system.

Operators can safely isolate sections of the network for maintenance, reducing risk and improving efficiency. The monitoring equipment provides better visibility of system performance, helping maintain stable voltage and power quality.

The combination of reliable switching, measurement, and insulation supports smooth operation across both the solar and battery systems.

Results

The Wandoan South Project is set to play a key role in delivering clean, reliable energy for Queensland, supporting both current demand and future growth.

Its advanced electrical system allows energy to be generated, stored, and delivered efficiently, helping improve overall grid stability.
