Vales Point Power Station

The Vales Point Power Station is a long‑established coal‑fired generator located on the southern shore of Lake Macquarie and has been a key contributor to New South Wales’ electricity supply since the 1960s. As the station continues to play a role in energy security and explores battery storage to support renewable integration, maintaining reliable operation and strong grid compliance remains critical. To support these objectives, Insulect supplied a Qualitrol IDM+ solution to enhance monitoring, fault visibility, and power quality performance across the site.

Challenge

Operating an ageing yet critical generation asset brings unique challenges, particularly as grid conditions become more dynamic with increasing renewable penetration. Delta Electricity needed greater visibility into electrical faults, disturbances, and power quality events to protect equipment, maintain compliance, and respond quickly to grid issues. Accurate monitoring was also essential to support participation in FCAS and to ensure confidence in the station’s ongoing performance as operating conditions evolved.

Solution

Insulect supplied and supported the implementation of the Qualitrol IDM+ platform, delivering a comprehensive monitoring solution tailored to the needs of the Vales Point Power Station. The system provides Digital Fault Recording and Dynamic Disturbance Recording to capture high‑resolution data during electrical events, alongside Class A Power Quality Monitoring for standards‑compliant measurement. FCAS Generation Performance Monitoring was also included, enabling clear insight into the station’s response to grid control signals and market requirements.
