safegridThis is a Safegrid Case Study.

Background

Keuruun Sähkö is a regional utility with more than 100 years of history serving the City of Keuruu and surrounding communities in Central Finland. The company operates approximately 660 km of medium-voltage network and is recognized for its commitment to service quality and continuous investment in modern technologies.

With more than 80% of its network consisting of overhead lines, weather-related disturbances remain a key operational challenge. To strengthen network resilience and maintain high service standards, KS sought a modern monitoring solution capable of providing accurate, real-time visibility into grid conditions.

Challenge

Keuruun Sähkö faced several operational challenges:

  • Maintaining reliability across a predominantly overhead-line network

  • Improving resilience against weather-related disturbances

  • Reducing service interruptions and outage durations

  • Increasing visibility into network events and fault conditions

  • Providing faster responses to faults and network abnormalities

As a utility focused on delivering high-quality service, KS required a proven solution that could support both immediate fault detection and long-term network optimization.

Solution

Keuruun Sähkö deployed Safegrid’s Intelligent Grid System™ across its distribution network.

Key components of the solution:

  • Grayhawk™ sensors for monitoring overhead lines

  • Grayfox™ sensors for monitoring underground cable networks

  • GridGuardian™ cloud platform for continuous monitoring and analytics

  • Real-time alerts delivered via web and mobile applications

  • Installation at secondary substations and pole-mounted transformers

The system provides operators with immediate fault notifications and precise location information, enabling faster field dispatch and more effective maintenance planning.

Benefits

The implementation of Safegrid’s IGS solution provides Keuruun Sähkö with several advantages:

  • Improved visibility into grid operations and fault events

  • Real-time alerts with precise fault location data

  • Faster fault response and restoration times

  • Enhanced weather resilience across the network

  • Reduced service interruptions and downtime

  • Improved operational efficiency through data-driven decision-making

  • Monitoring capabilities for both overhead and underground networks

Results

Following deployment, Keuruun Sähkö gained:

  • Enhanced real-time grid monitoring capabilities

  • Improved fault visibility across the network

  • Faster identification and repair of network issues

  • Increased reliability and service quality

  • Stronger resilience against weather-related disruptions

  • Greater operational confidence through continuous monitoring

“Over 80% of our network consists of overhead cables and we are investing in improving the weather resilience and service quality of the network. Safegrid’s IGS solution helps improve the quality of our service even further.”

Sari Kolu, Operations Engineer, Keuruun Sähkö

Conclusion

By deploying Safegrid’s Intelligent Grid System™, Keuruun Sähkö has taken another important step in modernizing its network and strengthening service reliability. The combination of intelligent sensors, cloud-based monitoring, and real-time fault alerts provides the utility with the visibility needed to respond faster, reduce disruptions, and maintain high-quality service for its customers.

This project demonstrates how even smaller regional utilities can leverage advanced grid technologies to improve operational efficiency, enhance weather resilience, and continue delivering reliable electricity well into the future.
