Project Overview

The Hillston Solar Farm is a 120 MW solar PV project located in regional New South Wales, covering 393 hectares and generating around 235,000 MWh of clean electricity each year. This output is enough to power approximately 54,000 homes while avoiding an estimated 160,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. As part of AMP Power’s expansion in Australia, the project required robust and reliable high‑voltage infrastructure to connect the solar farm safely and efficiently to the grid. Insulect was engaged to supply both 145 kV and 36 kV disconnectors to support these requirements.

Challenge

Large‑scale solar farms depend on dependable high‑voltage equipment to ensure safe grid connection and continuous operation. For Hillston Solar Farm, the challenge was delivering switching equipment capable of operating reliably across different voltage levels while meeting strict safety, performance, and project schedule requirements. The remote location and scale of the project meant that reliability was critical, as any failure could lead to downtime, lost generation, and increased maintenance costs.

Solution

Insulect supplied a coordinated solution consisting of 145 kV and 36 kV disconnectors selected to suit the solar farm’s grid connection and internal electrical network. These disconnectors were chosen for their proven performance, robust design, and suitability for outdoor operation in regional Australian conditions. Insulect worked closely with the project team to ensure the equipment aligned with design specifications and could be installed smoothly as part of the wider electrical infrastructure.

Benefits

The supplied disconnectors provided safe and dependable isolation points within the high‑voltage network, supporting both normal operation and maintenance activities. Their reliability helped minimise operational risk and supported consistent energy export to the grid. By supplying equipment across multiple voltage levels, Insulect simplified procurement and ensured compatibility within the electrical system, contributing to a more efficient project delivery.

The Results

With Insulect’s high‑voltage disconnectors in place, the Hillston Solar Farm delivers clean, renewable energy reliably to the New South Wales grid. The project plays an important role in reducing carbon emissions while supporting regional energy generation. This case study demonstrates Insulect’s ability to support large‑scale renewable projects with proven, fit‑for‑purpose solutions that underpin safe operation and long‑term performance.
