Overview
The Winton Solar Farm in Victoria is an 85 MW-AC renewable energy project supplying clean power to over 52,000 homes, helping to transform Australia’s energy system. Developed and operated by FRV, the project also supports local community initiatives through grants and agri-solar activities. Insulect supplied 72kV Disconnectors, ensuring safe and reliable high-voltage switching for the farm’s grid connection.
Challenge
Solar farms don’t produce a constant level of power, output changes throughout the day depending on sunlight and weather. This means the electrical system must be able to handle these changes while keeping the power supply stable.
There also needs to be a safe way to isolate parts of the system for maintenance or if a fault occurs, without affecting the rest of the site. Reliability and safety are critical, especially for equipment operating outdoors over long periods.
Solution
Insulect supplied 145kV and 36kV disconnectors designed for safe and reliable switching.
These disconnectors allow operators to isolate sections of the network when needed, making maintenance safer and easier to manage. They were installed as part of the solar farm’s grid connection, helping control how energy moves from the site into the wider network.
Benefits
With Insulect’s equipment in place, the Winton Solar Farm has a safer and more flexible electrical system.
Operators can work on parts of the network without shutting everything down, which reduces downtime and improves safety. The system can also better handle changes in solar generation throughout the day.
The disconnectors are built to last, helping reduce maintenance needs and supporting reliable long-term operation.
Results
Today, the Winton Solar Farm is delivering clean, renewable energy into the grid, supporting homes and businesses across Victoria.
Its electrical system works reliably in the background, ensuring power is transferred safely and efficiently.
Insulect’s disconnectors play an important role in this, helping the project run smoothly and deliver consistent performance over time.
