Overview

The Flyers Creek Wind Farm in New South Wales is a 145 MW project featuring 38 wind turbines designed to generate 450 GWh per year, powering over 80,000 homes. As part of the infrastructure, Insulect provided the 132kV Disconnectors for the connection to the Essential Energy network, ensuring safe and reliable high-voltage switching. This project contributes significantly to the renewable energy supply and supports the transition to cleaner, more sustainable power sources.

Challenge

Wind farms produce energy that constantly changes depending on wind conditions. This means the electrical system must be able to handle variable power while keeping the connection to the grid stable and secure.

There is also a need for safe isolation points so maintenance can be carried out without disrupting the wider network. Reliability and safety are critical, especially for equipment operating outdoors over long periods.

Solution

Insulect supplied 132kV disconnectors designed for safe and reliable high-voltage switching.

These disconnectors allow operators to isolate parts of the electrical system when needed, making maintenance safer and more controlled. They were installed as part of the wind farm’s grid connection to ensure smooth and secure energy transfer into the Essential Energy network.

Benefits

With Insulect’s equipment in place, the Flyers Creek Wind Farm has a safer and more reliable electrical system.

Operators can isolate sections of the network when required, reducing risk during maintenance and improving overall safety. The system is also better able to manage changes in wind generation throughout the day.

The disconnectors are built for durability, supporting long-term performance in outdoor conditions.

Results

Today, the Flyers Creek Wind Farm is delivering large-scale renewable energy into the grid, supporting tens of thousands of homes across New South Wales.

Its high-voltage system operates reliably in the background, ensuring clean power flows safely from generation to the network.
