The Tarong Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 300 MW, two-hour battery project located at Tarong Power Station near Nanango in Queensland’s South Burnett region.
Developed by Stanwell Corporation with construction partner Yurika, the $514 million project is Stanwell’s first battery energy storage project. With a total storage capacity of 600 MWh, the BESS is designed to provide fast-response grid support and help balance renewable energy generation across Queensland.
As Queensland’s electricity system transitions towards greater renewable generation, grid-scale energy storage is becoming increasingly important for maintaining network stability and managing fluctuations in electricity supply and demand.
The Tarong BESS required reliable high-voltage equipment to support its connection to the existing Tarong Power Station infrastructure. The equipment needed to meet the electrical and operational requirements of a large-scale energy storage project while providing dependable performance within a critical power generation site.
Insulect supplied key HV equipment for the Tarong BESS project, including:
These products form part of the project's high-voltage electrical infrastructure, supporting isolation, measurement and insulation requirements across the 33 kV and 275 kV systems.
Insulect's supply provided Stanwell and the project team with access to a range of HV equipment through a single specialist supplier, supporting the integration of the BESS into the existing Tarong Power Station site.
The supplied disconnectors, instrument transformers and post insulators support the safe and reliable operation of the BESS's high-voltage electrical infrastructure.
The equipment contributes to the electrical infrastructure required for a 300 MW battery system capable of storing 600 MWh of energy.
Located at Tarong Power Station, the BESS is integrated into an established generation site. The supplied HV equipment supports the connection between the new battery infrastructure and the site's high-voltage network.
Insulect supplied equipment for both 33 kV and 275 kV systems, helping meet the project's requirements across different stages of the HV electrical infrastructure.
The Tarong BESS commenced commercial operations in February 2026, adding 300 MW of fast-response energy storage capacity to the Tarong generating site.
The battery can respond within fractions of a second to support grid stability, charge when renewable generation is high and discharge electricity during periods of high demand.
With the BESS now operating alongside Tarong Power Station, the overall site capacity has increased to approximately 2.1 GW, strengthening its role as a major energy hub for Queensland.
Insulect is proud to have supported this significant energy infrastructure project by supplying HV equipment for one of Queensland's major grid-scale battery developments.
