Overview
The Tallawarra Power Station project focused on supplying critical electrical equipment to support upgrades at one of NSW’s key energy facilities. As part of this work, Insulect was also tasked with delivering a specialised monitoring device to support frequency control and ancillary services. From the outset, the project stood out due to its technical complexity and the client’s specific operational requirements, creating an opportunity for Insulect to demonstrate adaptability and creative problem solving.
Challenge
The project came with strict technical requirements and demanding timelines, requiring a solution that was both precise and reliable. In addition, the monitoring setup requested by GE differed from standard installations, requiring a customised approach. Unlike typical projects where multiple devices are housed within a single cubicle, this installation required a dedicated cubicle for the IDM Plus device. Meeting these specifications while controlling costs and ensuring timely delivery required Insulect to rethink its usual delivery model.
Solution
Rather than following the standard practice of shipping only the monitoring device and relying on local assembly in Australia, Insulect took a different approach. The team assembled the complete cubicle, including the IDM Plus device, at their Belfast, UK facility and shipped it to Australia as a fully integrated solution. Although this involved higher upfront shipping costs, Insulect identified that pre‑assembly would ultimately be more cost‑effective than local fabrication and assembly. This approach also reduced risk, ensured factory‑controlled build quality, and simplified installation on site.
Benefits
By tailoring the solution to the client’s exact needs, Insulect delivered a monitoring system that met all technical requirements while optimising project costs. The decision to leverage Insulect’s global resources reduced onsite complexity and commissioning time, providing the client with a ready‑to‑install solution. The customised cubicle ensured clear separation of equipment, improved accessibility, and aligned with the operational expectations set by GE.
Results
The successful delivery of the Tallawarra Power Station project highlighted Insulect’s ability to adapt to complex project demands and deliver innovative, cost‑effective solutions. The project reinforced Insulect’s reputation for strong technical support, attention to detail, and willingness to go beyond standard practices to achieve the best outcome for the client. Ongoing support, including monthly remote monitoring and health checks, further demonstrated Insulect’s commitment to the long‑term success and reliability of the installation. This project stands as a strong example of how Insulect combines technical expertise, flexibility, and customer‑focused thinking to support critical energy infrastructure.
