The Wunghnu Solar Farm is a 90 MWdc solar and battery project in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, generating enough clean electricity to power 27,152 homes and offset 150,640 tonnes of CO₂ annually. As part of the grid connection infrastructure, Insulect supplied 72kV Disconnectors, ensuring safe and reliable high-voltage operation for this renewable energy development.
Connecting a large-scale solar farm to the grid is not as simple as generating power. It demands precise, reliable high-voltage control. The infrastructure must safely manage fluctuating energy flows while maintaining strict compliance with grid standards.
For Wunghnu, the challenge was ensuring that the high-voltage connection could operate seamlessly under varying load conditions, while also allowing for safe isolation during maintenance or unexpected events. Any compromise in this system could impact both safety and the consistency of renewable energy delivery.
Insulect provided 72kV disconnectors tailored to meet the project’s grid connection requirements. Designed for durability and performance, these disconnectors enable the safe isolation of electrical circuits, a critical function in both routine maintenance and fault management.
Working closely with project stakeholders, Insulect ensured that the equipment integrated smoothly into the broader electrical system. The result was a solution that not only met technical specifications but also aligned with the project’s timelines and operational goals.
With Insulect’s disconnectors in place, the Wunghnu Solar Farm benefits from a dependable and safe high-voltage connection to the grid. Operators can confidently isolate sections of the network when needed, reducing risk and improving maintenance efficiency.
The reliability of the equipment supports consistent energy export, even as solar generation fluctuates throughout the day. This stability is essential for maintaining grid integrity and maximising the value of renewable energy production.
Additionally, the robust design ensures long-term performance, reducing the need for frequent interventions and supporting the project’s sustainability objectives.
Today, the Wunghnu Solar Farm is delivering clean energy to tens of thousands of homes, contributing to a lower-carbon future for Victoria. Its high-voltage infrastructure operates reliably in the background, enabling uninterrupted power flow from generation to grid.
Insulect’s role, while often unseen, is integral, helping ensure that renewable energy is not only generated, but delivered safely and efficiently. In a project defined by sustainability and innovation, the right electrical solutions have helped turn potential into performance.
