Overview

The Ironbark No.1 underground longwall operation, part of Fitzroy Mining Operations, commenced production in August 2022, just seven months after construction began. Located 25km north of Carborough Downs, it shares key infrastructure with Fitzroy’s other sites, with coal hauled to the Carborough Downs Coal Handling Plant for processing. Insulect supplied the 132kV Disconnectors and Dead Tank Circuit Breaker, ensuring reliable high-voltage switching and protection for the mine’s power infrastructure as it scales up to a 360-strong workforce at full production.

Challenge

Starting a new underground mine on a fast timeline brings pressure to get critical systems in place quickly and correctly. Power infrastructure needs to be reliable from day one, as mining operations depend on continuous electricity to run safely and efficiently.

The system also needs to allow safe isolation for maintenance and be able to respond quickly to faults. In a mining environment, any power issue can impact production and safety.

Solution

Insulect supplied 132kV disconnectors and a dead tank circuit breaker designed for high-voltage switching and protection.

The disconnectors allow operators to isolate parts of the network when needed, making maintenance safer and easier. The circuit breaker provides fast fault protection, helping prevent damage and keep the system stable.

These components were integrated into the mine’s electrical infrastructure to support reliable day-to-day operation.

Benefits

With Insulect’s equipment in place, the mine has a safer and more dependable power system.

Operators can carry out maintenance with less risk, thanks to clear isolation points. The circuit breaker helps protect the system by quickly responding to faults, reducing the chance of wider disruptions.

The equipment is built for durability, supporting ongoing performance in a demanding mining environment.

Results

Since starting production, Ironbark No.1 has operated with a strong and reliable electrical foundation, supporting its growing workforce and output.

The high-voltage system works in the background to keep power flowing safely across the site.

Insulect’s disconnectors and circuit breaker play an important role in this, helping ensure the mine runs efficiently, safely, and with the reliability needed for long-term success.
