Project Overview

The Kwinana Nickel Refinery, part of BHP’s Nickel West operations, is a critical industrial facility producing up to 65,000 tonnes of nickel each year for global markets. As a continuous‑process operation, the refinery relies on dependable electrical infrastructure to maintain production, protect personnel, and avoid costly downtime. To support safe and reliable high‑voltage switching at the site, Insulect supplied 145kV Disconnectors as part of the refinery’s electrical network.

Challenge

Nickel refining is an energy‑intensive process that depends on uninterrupted power supply. Any failure in high‑voltage switching equipment could result in production losses, safety risks, and extended outages. The Kwinana site required switching equipment that could perform reliably in a heavy industrial environment while meeting strict safety and operational requirements. With the refinery operating continuously, there was very little tolerance for equipment that lacked durability or proven performance.

Solution

Insulect supplied 145kV Disconnectors specifically selected to meet the refinery’s high‑voltage switching requirements. These disconnectors were chosen for their robust construction, reliable operation, and suitability for demanding industrial conditions. Insulect worked closely with the project team to ensure the equipment aligned with site standards and could be integrated smoothly into the existing electrical infrastructure, supporting safe isolation during maintenance and reliable operation during normal plant conditions.

Benefits

The installation of reliable 145kV Disconnectors improved operational safety by enabling secure isolation of high‑voltage circuits when required. Their proven performance reduced the risk of unplanned outages and supported the refinery’s need for continuous, stable power. By supplying dependable equipment designed for long service life, Insulect helped minimise maintenance demands while supporting consistent production at the site.

Results

With Insulect’s disconnectors in place, the Kwinana Nickel Refinery continues to operate with confidence in its high‑voltage switching capability. The project reinforced the importance of reliable electrical infrastructure in large‑scale industrial operations and demonstrated Insulect’s ability to support critical mining and processing facilities with robust, fit‑for‑purpose solutions that deliver long‑term value.
